Bed of Roses: Tween Girl Room Makeover

Teen Girls RoomJenny SulpizioComment

I love the opportunity to work on "coming-of-age" rooms. It's a bittersweet time when girls are ready to put the dolls and Shopkins away and break out into a more mature look and design within their bedrooms.  And it's so neat to hear their likes and dislikes...and then coordinate their spaces accordingly.

Last year, I worked on big sister "K's" room, and now it was little sister, "N's" turn for a new room and a totally fresh look.

I sat down with her and her mom and through our consultation we came up with some really fun ideas; fairy lights (they're the "it" thing right now), new bedding, a fresh coat of paint for her walls, new drapes, and lots of glitter and gold (I love me some gold!).

Here is where we started:

This room is SUPER cute but "N" was more than ready to ditch the bubblegum pink walls and Pottery Barn KIDS items. This girl wanted to take it to the next level and I think AFC was able to do just that.

There's lots to discuss when it comes to this room. So many details and lots of little tidbits I'm itching to give the scoop on. But this room makeover wouldn't of even existed if it weren't for a little inspiration: the Bed of Roses Pottery Barn TEEN linen line from Emily & Meritt. Isn't it gorgeous?!!! That rich black color paired with those roses in varying shades of blush pink and slight hints of coral? Holy smokes! Love it!

Once we had the bedding, we needed the paint! We wanted walls that coordinated with the beauty of those bed linens. "N" selected SW Romance and it was P-E-R-F-E-C-T! Look at that color.

As soon as the bedding and wall color had been decided upon, we needed to address "N's" reading nook. The canopy (scroll back up to the "before" pics to grab another glimpse) was cute--and she definitely wanted to keep it--but in order to work with her new room, this piece needed some sprucing up. This simple, tasseled Pillowfort canopy from Target got a sweet makeover that went a little something like this:

First I removed all of the tassels. I then purchased these awesome (and inexpensive) flowers (intended for wall decor) at Hobby Lobby. Aren't they cute?

I brought some home and got to work cutting them up. By removing the backs and hangers, I was left with a lightweight flower that could easily be sewn onto the panels of the canopy.

Once those bad boys were sewn in place, I added the black pom garland (found at Hobby Lobby) to give it a little somethin'-somethin'. The final step? Attaching a large and super fun flower front and center as the finishing touch (also found at Hobby Lobby). However, they didn't have the color I wanted...but they did have a large selection of spray paint which did the trick!

Worked like a charm. Once it had a chance to dry, this large flower was secured and voila(!). The canopy was completely different...new...and fresh. And now it coordinated with what was about to go down in the rest of this room makeover.

Soooo, after a few weeks of painting, shopping, gathering, and ordering, this room finally came together. The end result? A bedroom fit for a tween...not too old, not too young, but just right. The best thing? This space will grow right along with "N" so there's no need for another room reno in those teenage years.

Ready for the rest of the "after" pics? I absolutely love how this bedroom turned out. Definitely girly, very soft, and plenty pretty. And? I kind of want to move in. ;)

Her North-facing wall received a small gallery of age-perfect items ( I'm loving the unicorn!) that coordinate with her beautiful new bedding. A custom-made gold monogram sits front and center above her bed, while a mixture of gold, black, white, and blush-hued throw pillows definitely make a statement..

"N" was adamant she wanted fairy lights and I totally understand why. I grabbed this gold frame from Hobby Lobby this past summer and attached the eight-speed fairy lights to the back of it. Even cooler? These lights are super convenient in that they run off of a remote, have a timer, as well as a number of options as far as light sequencing goes. "N" will soon attach pics of her and her friends using the gold-glittered clothes pins we added.

This sparkly gold vase? Sooo pretty! Also? Faux flowers for the win!

The reading nook is ready to go and "N's" armoire received a few finishing touches as well by means of more faux blooms, a chalkboard accent board she can change out anytime she likes, and a little word art too.

Last but not least, the Pottery Barn Teen drapes and accompanying pom garland are simply beautiful and accent the bedding just perfectly. And how about those curtain rods? They coordinate with the gold geometric lamp that sits on "N's nightstand.

This tween girl's room is officially made over.
