A Fresh Coat

Pretty Little Playroom

New builds are a blank canvas of sorts.

After months and months of planning and waiting, once those keys are in hand, it’s time to customize and decorate.

And paint.

See, most of the time with semi-custom homes, using more than one color will cost you some serious moola. Most of the time you’re better painting individual spaces on your own.

Mrs. “C” contacted me back in November while her build was underway and asked if I could help her create a special space in the teen room of her new home. With three beautiful girls, she was envisioning some Boho flair, with hints of blush, and above all—a black accent wall.

Ahhh, my love language (just kidding), but as most of you already know, I love using black in my designs. I’m not sure if it’s the contrast or the boldness of it ( or maybe even a combination of the two), but I love it.

Okay, here we go. Let’s start from the beginning:

Mrs. “C” opted for bright white throughout her home and these amazing (!) floors. This Kerley Ranch home is seriously gorgeous and now all it needed was decor to take it to the next level.

After our consultation it was clear where this space was headed. As always, it started with the vision board:

Black, white, and Boho all over. First thing on the “to-do” list though? The black accent wall. Using Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black (my fave), this wall was about to get a major makeover.

After trimming the wall out, I kind of wanted to keep it this way. It was like art or something. LOL

But since that wasn’t in the plans, I got to work painting it all black. After one coat…

And then two, this wall was complete.

Now for the decorating. Mrs. “C” definitely has an eye for cute decor and purchased a number of things both online and locally to help create this room. My job was to pull it all together which in my opinion, is the best part.

Being given a slew of items and then asked to create the space is like this epic challenge to me and I love every minute of it.

Ready for the results? Ta-da!

Between the poufs, the kid’s table, and the Nugget couch, there is plenty of seating and room to hangout in this sweet space.

This accent wall is all about layering and creating balance from left to right, right to left. Don’t be afraid to try new things either. See the dual colored baskets at the very top? Those are actually two pieces that I put together. It’s all about trial and error. Some things work while others do not, but you’ll never know until you try. ;)

One more time for the before and after and this room is D-O-N-E!
