Boho Chic Great Room

Family RoomsJenny SulpizioComment

I’ve shared a number of room makeovers from this home on the blog already but with this room recently receiving its finishing touches, it was time to share it with you all.

I have to admit, I’m kinda smitten with it.

Mrs “M” gave me a call waaaaaay back in September looking for a painter to give her walls a little more personality. What evolved was a complete and total room transformation—Boho style.

Here is where we started:

What you see above is EXACTLY what you want to do when deciding on paint colors: place them on a number of walls in your home and check them out at various times during the day. This is the fool-proof method of ensuring that you get the right color for your space every time. Promise!

The winners (minus the chicken dinner)? These guys.

Once painted, Mrs “M” was ready to add in some new elements. As always, it started with the vision board.

Lots of black and white, that pretty butterscotch color, and minimalist furniture that lends to a more modern style all whilst channeling some serious 70’s vibes. So fun.

Even “H” got into the act. A boy after my own heart with all those throw pillows! ;)

If you’re a fan of the Boho style, then you are loving this. Mudcloth draperies, a beautiful green velvet couch (hosting the newest member of their sweet family), fun textiles and patterns, creamy white walls, leather, plants, and loads of texture.

New furniture mixed with some old brought this whole room to life. Oh, and I can’t forget to mention that amazing art piece above the TV. Mrs. “M” maaaaaade that! Not even joking.

Here it is up close (and sort of personal):

One more glimpse of the before and after and then I’ll offer up all the details on this amazing transformation.

Pretty Little Playroom

Play RoomsJenny Sulpizio3 Comments

New builds are a blank canvas of sorts.

After months and months of planning and waiting, once those keys are in hand, it’s time to customize and decorate.

And paint.

See, most of the time with semi-custom homes, using more than one color will cost you some serious moola. Most of the time you’re better painting individual spaces on your own.

Mrs. “C” contacted me back in November while her build was underway and asked if I could help her create a special space in the teen room of her new home. With three beautiful girls, she was envisioning some Boho flair, with hints of blush, and above all—a black accent wall.

Ahhh, my love language (just kidding), but as most of you already know, I love using black in my designs. I’m not sure if it’s the contrast or the boldness of it ( or maybe even a combination of the two), but I love it.

Okay, here we go. Let’s start from the beginning:

Pretty Playroom 9.jpg

Mrs. “C” opted for bright white throughout her home and these amazing (!) floors. This Kerley Ranch home is seriously gorgeous and now all it needed was decor to take it to the next level.

After our consultation it was clear where this space was headed. As always, it started with the vision board:

Comella Playroom.jpg

Black, white, and Boho all over. First thing on the “to-do” list though? The black accent wall. Using Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black (my fave), this wall was about to get a major makeover.

Pretty Playroom 8.jpg

After trimming the wall out, I kind of wanted to keep it this way. It was like art or something. LOL

Pretty Playroom 10.jpg

But since that wasn’t in the plans, I got to work painting it all black. After one coat…

Pretty Playroom 11.jpg

And then two, this wall was complete.

Now for the decorating. Mrs. “C” definitely has an eye for cute decor and purchased a number of things both online and locally to help create this room. My job was to pull it all together which in my opinion, is the best part.

Being given a slew of items and then asked to create the space is like this epic challenge to me and I love every minute of it.

Ready for the results? Ta-da!

Pretty Playroom 7-2.jpg

Between the poufs, the kid’s table, and the Nugget couch, there is plenty of seating and room to hangout in this sweet space.

Pretty Playroom 1.jpg

This accent wall is all about layering and creating balance from left to right, right to left. Don’t be afraid to try new things either. See the dual colored baskets at the very top? Those are actually two pieces that I put together. It’s all about trial and error. Some things work while others do not, but you’ll never know until you try. ;)

One more time for the before and after and this room is D-O-N-E!

Marvel Madness

Boys BedroomsJenny Sulpizio2 Comments

This is one of those projects—-the kind I get so excited about I can hardly wait to reveal it to you guys. The type of project where I’ve been given complete creative liberty and the green light to do whatever I want.

Yes, you read that right…WHATEVER I WANT!

Projects like these are rare (and I understand why), but when they happen, I just can’t contain my excitement.

Plus, I LOVE kids rooms and am totally in my element when working with a theme.

It. Is. The. Most. Fun.

Like, ever.

Ok, enough babbling already. Here we go. This is where we started, friends:

Marvel Madness 2.jpg
Marvel Madness 1.jpg

“E” loves Avengers and his mama wanted to give him a room that screamed ‘em from the ceiling to the floor. Of course I was happy to oblige and wanted to do something a little different…like wall mural type of different.

In the process of searching, my inspiration came into focus after locating this amazing wallpaper mural from Rebel Walls.

Rebel Walls

Now, this isn’t for everybody but I so dig the city vibe it gives off. Not only that, but this can in fact grow with this kiddo well into his teens, which means my client is getting the biggest bang (pow, splat, and kerplunk) for her buck. Get it?! LOL!

As always, it starts with a vision board and this one was packed full of color.

Superhero Bedroom.jpg

So even though this kiddo has yet to hit double digits, the items presented and purchased in this room will give him years of joy. And those he grows out of (namely throw pillows and a few art pieces), can be replaced by something else.

Those of you who follow me on Instagram might have seen me having way too much fun on a semi-recent trip to the Pottery Barn Oulet up in Phoenix. I scored a number of pieces for this room there and the rest were located online.

Okay, so let’s get to the details of this space. Here’s how it went down.

The first thing that had to be addressed was the wallpaper. Here in AZ we mostly have textured walls. Textured walls and wallpaper (for the most part) do not mix which means this wall had to be skim coated and then wallpapered. Thanks to Ramon Navaratte and his crew, this got done in no time at all.

Marvel Madness 4.jpg

I can’t stand it. Ready for the “after” pics followed by all the details?

Marvel Madness 3.jpg
Marvel Madness 12.jpg

I mean, I can’t even. I just love how this room came together…and all that color balanced with those neutrals. It’s just F-U-N!

Let’s chat about the paint first.

This room doesn’t get a lot of natural light because the curtains are usually drawn tight (hey—that rhymed!), so I wanted to make sure the wall color I was using was light and bright. I opted for Sherwin William’s Crushed Ice. With just a hint of grey, it really did brighten up the room and allowed that wall mural to pop. We took that dingy 90’s yellow and reworked it!

Now this is where the fun began. After buying striped grey bedding and basic grey draperies, color was brought in everywhere else. From the rug, to the throw pillows, to the shelving, and everything inbetween. Superheroes are all about color and I wanted to give “E” tons of it.

Marvel Madness 6.jpg

This included a one of a kind, custom lampshade. I almost gave up hope on this one until I posted a plea to my Instagram followers and they came through. Clutch! I got the name of a pro tagger/artist who was amazing to work with and tagged this lampshade just for “E.”

Marvel Madness 13.jpg

Color was also introduced by means of framed artwork via Etsy. I always get most of my pieces from the fabulous creators on that site and this job was no different. Superhero sayings, a monogram, along with a few other prints, and the shelves were decked out.

Marvel Madness 5.jpg

Furniture was another issue that needed to be addressed and placement for this space was a bit of a challenge. It actually kept me up at night because I didn’t want to place the bed length-wise up against the windows because it always makes the draperies wonky. I didn’t want to place it up against the wallpaper as tyo help preserve it and not rub against it either. I also didn’t want to keep it as it was originally because that wasn’t ideal either. Long story short? The TV was moved across the room, the bed rearranged, and the dresser tucked away in the closet. The result? A more open space, additional room, and an area that works.

Boys BOHO Bathroom

BathroomJenny SulpizioComment

I’ve mentioned before that I truly love the Bohemian style. It’s minimalist, however, it’s packed with personality. There really aren’t any rules and you can mix so many pieces together to come up with a really fun space.

When asked by “H’s” mom if I could remake his bathroom into a space that would coordinate with his bedroom, I was all over it. Not only do I love BOHO, but I love coordinating rooms together based off of this style. So, here is where we started.

Boys BOHO Bedroom 1 copy.jpg

Since “H’s” bedroom got a sweet black chalkboard wall with a color palette of black, white, and butterscotch, I wanted to make sure I carried over these colors into the loo. This bathroom is attached and easily visible from his bedroom so it need to have some cohesion.

It started with the vision board:

Harrison's Boho Bathroom.jpg

Let’s just say I had a ton of fun creating this space because “H’s” mom gave me full creative liberties. So when I mentioned creating board and batten moldings in this amazing butterscotch hue (Valspar’s Butcher Block), she didn’t even bat an eye! Love that! When I introduced the idea of Swiss cross decals and leather pulls for the cabinetry doors and drawers, she was on board. Swoon! And when I mentioned painting the vanity in a shade of black, she said “yes!” Sweeeeet!

Boys BOHO Bathroom 2.jpg

Valspar’s Dogwood Petals and Butcher Block going on the walls and trim!

Boys BOHO Bathroom 3.jpg

After three coats of this beautiful, creamy white (four coats at the crown and edges), and only two passes using this butterscotch hue, the bathroom was starting to take shape! “H’s” mom opted for the chair rail over the board and batten and even installed it for me (that girl is handy)!

Next up? Swiss cross vinyl appliques. Now, these could have been painted on but in an effort to keep this as semi-permanent (and uniform) as possible, I opted for decals. Plus, they are super inexpensive and truly make the top portion of this wall all the way around the room.

Boys BOHO Bathroom 4.jpg

These cute, little, inexpensive X’s (available on Amazon) are totally making this space come to life at this point. This also happens to be the part where I start getting all giddy over my client’s spaces because they are right on the cusp of completion.

So, how about the “after” shots?

Boy's BOHO Bathroom 10-2.jpg

You guys! I love this space. I love every detail that went into it. Believe me when I tell you that there is a lot of love, thought (and sweat) that went into the creation, execution, and installation of this one space.

Let’s start with some details:

Boy's BOHO Bathroom 7.jpg

The shower curtain is the same Wal-Mart piece I’ve used in a previous client’s refresh. With black fabric added to the bottom and a modern shower curtain rod placed high, it looks super cute and fun. Also, how about that light? Mrs. “M” selected this sweet thing and I totally love it.

Boy's BOHO Bathroom 6.jpg

Here’s a shot of that great mirror, the recently painted black cabinetry (Valspar’s Iron Ore), and those charming (yet masculine) leather drawer pulls all the way from Poland. Yes, Poland!

Boy's BOHO Bathroom 8.jpg

There were a number of vanity lights we could have chosen that would accommodate the Boho style BUT we opted for horizontal caged light (as shown below) fixture, as to not disrupt the height of the mirror. Basically, if we used a vanity with light sconces that pointed downward, they would cause the mirror to sit lower (too low, in fact), and it just wouldn’t look right. The other option was to raise the light fixture and electrical higher on the wall but that was a bit involved. Too involved.

So, we opted for this and I think it looks great!

Boy's BOHO Bathroom 13.jpg

How about this angle? Look at that sweet toilet decal. Perfect for a little (or big) boy’s restroom, don’t you think?

Boy's BOHO Bathroom 5.jpg

Swoon.

Boy's BOHO Bathroom 11.jpg

This stool was a great HomeGoods find. It jived perfectly with the rest of this newly refreshed restroom, and was the perfect height for “H.” Also? It was a total steal at only $14.99.

Boy's BOHO Bathroom 9.jpg

Last but not least is this great print. Mrs. “M” made using Photoshop and the awesome gold frame found on Amazon. A fun saying for a really fun bathroom.

Boy's BOHO Bedroom

Boys BedroomsJenny SulpizioComment

Boho. I love the feel of a Boho room. The simplicity of this style mixed with an “anything goes” kind of vibe is freeing when it comes to decorating and just plain living in said spaces. It’s awesome, actually. Even more so when it’s for a one of the sweetest (and smartest) little guy’s I know. “H” is preparing to become a big brother (verrrrry soon) which means he needs a space to call his own—a room just for him with a style that’s crazy cool.

“H’s” mom is also extremely cool herself and when we discussed the makeover of this space, she gave me creative freedom to design the entire thing. I love that.

Mrs. “M” found this amazing coverlet at Target and it quickly became the inspiration for this space.

Here is where we started:

Boys Boho Bedroom 1.jpg

Now, the entire home was painted in a beautiful shade of grey, but Mrs. “M” had grown tired of it and wanted something new…something fresh and so clean clean. Oh, and an accent wall. She definitely wanted “H” to have an interactive accent wall.

Boys Boho Bedroom 2.jpg

Can you guess what we did?

Boys Boho Bedroom 3.jpg

If you said “chalkboard wall,” you’re right!

Two quarts and three coats of this stuff and the walls were ready for our budding artist. Chalkboard paint can literally come in any color (ask your local paint store for options), but I’m digging the striking contrast this wall boasts (imagine that? ). Can you see where this room is headed? Just that one wall make such a difference already. Can’t wait for the rest.

Boys Boho Bedroom 4.jpg

Thes remaining walls were lightened and brightened using Valspar’s Dogwood Petals. C-O-N-T-R-A-S-T! Love it…and apparently “H” and his friends do too. Look at him go!

IMG_2410 2.jpg

Ok, ready for the “after” shots? I really love how this room turned out.

Boy's Boho Bedroom 1.jpg

And look! You can see the bathroom from this view and all those little Swiss Crosses. #swoon.

Boy's Boho Bedroom 4.jpg

When it came to the opposite wall, a gallery of sayings, and beautiful BOHO art was in order. This shelf was such a great find, as were a number of the pieces found at Hobby Lobby, Target, and Etsy.

And look! You can see the playroom from this view, complete with more of those adorable Swiss Crosses. #doubleswoon.

Boy's Boho Bedroom 2.jpg

Here’s an up close (and not-too-personal) shot of those items.

EFFD030F-9D50-4AFD-9BE4-372D2C82B447 2.JPG

Needless to say this is definitely a room with a view…of the bathroom. Here’s another shot of these coordinating spaces. Oh, and ignore the bathroom vanity doors which are open and currently drying. That bathroom is coming to the blog soon once I put the finishing touches on it.

Boy's Boho Bedroom 3.jpg

One final view of this madeover space. I so dig it.
